Before Samuel Colt, there were already:

  • multi-shot firearms;

  • pistols with rotating cylinders;

  • pepperbox systems;

  • manual cylinder-indexing mechanisms.

In other words, the idea of a rotating cylinder had existed for a long time.

What Colt did — and this was revolutionary — was transform the concept into a truly practical, automated, repeatable, and industrialized system.

His real contribution was combining several existing ideas into a single functional and commercially viable mechanism.
